Protecting Your Air Conditioning System From Lightning Surges

If you have been a Florida resident for any length of time, you know in the summer there is a lot of  thunder storms. Frequently, we have power outages or power surges, that can cause everything in your home to shut off.  If you are aware there is a storm coming, the best thing you can do is turn off your air conditioner at the thermostat until the storm passes.

Lightning Facts

Florida is the lightning capital of the world.
Florida averages 1.4 million lightning strikes a year.
In 2015 alone, there were 11,898 related homeowner insurance claims in Florida.

How Lightning or Power Surges Can Hurt Your Air Conditioner

  • Damage the capacitor
  • Trip the breaker or blow fuses
  • Burn electrical wires
  • Damage the compressor
With frequent storms and hurricanes in the summer months it is a good idea to have surge protection for your home.

There are a few different ways to go. You can buy a surge protector for your major appliances including your air conditioning system. But FPL has an alternative called Surge Shield. It is whole house protection for your home. It is installed inside your electric meter, and protects all of your major appliances, including your air conditioner, from power surges or outages. Surge Shield comes with a $5000.00 limited manufacturer's warranty per appliance, per occurance.

If you have any questions about surge protection or have problems with your air conditioning give us a call at 321-639-4691.

What To Do If Your A/C Condensate Line Is Plugged

Air Conditioners do two jobs: Cool the air and remove humidity from your home. Here in Florida, where it is very
humid, you want your A/C unit to dehumidify your home. But where does all that moisture go?

In most homes, it goes through a PVC pipe and outdoors. Sometimes there's a pump that pumps it out and sometimes it drains by gravity alone.

Occasionally the condensate line may get plugged. When the condensate line stops draining, your A/C will not be able to cool your home. Gunk builds up in the line (usually from a dirty air filter) and the fluid cannot drain out.

If you have access to a wet/dry vacuum, you can hook the house up to the line and suck it out. Another thing to try is to use positive air pressure to blow it the other direction. This will break it loose. If none of these tasks work, you will need to call your air conditioning company to remove the clog.

Below is a switch we use on our installs. It makes it easy to clean out your condensate line.

This is one of the main reasons why we like our customers to join our Just Right Club. An ounce
of maintenance is worth a pound of cure!

9 ThingsTo Ask For on Your Air Conditioning Estimate

  • What size air conditioner do I need?
Every air conditioning company should do a heat load on your house. This gives us the information we need to ensure you are getting the right size (tonnage) air conditioner.

  • Can the current duct work be used?
At the time of your estimate, all air conditioning companies should look at your duct work. If it is in good condition, no problem, it can, and often is reused.

  • Are there any new technologies I should consider?
The air conditioning industry has come a long way. There are now "smart" or WiFi thermostats. They can notify you if your system is not working properly and a lot of other cool stuff.

  • Will my new air conditioner be energy efficient?
You will want to talk to your HVAC company and ask about SEER.  The higher the SEER. the more energy efficient your air conditioner will be.

  • What brands do you offer?
Most companies will sell you any brand you want. At Emery Air and Heat, we believe your value is derived not from the brand of air conditioner you choose, but the company you choose to do business with.

  • Do you handle all permits?
Yes! We submit all paperwork and pull any permits needed. No worries for you!

Yes! We have a few different options. We try and meet every customers needs.

  • How long does it take to install a new system?
Usually, we can have the system installed in one day. We leave the home the way we found it. We always clean up after our work is completed.

  • Are you licensed, bonded and insured?
Yes! Do not let anybody do any work in your home unless they are.

How Does Air Conditioning Work?

We know in Florida it's hot. We rely on our air conditoiner to keep us cool. But every once in a while, they do break down. If you have ever wondered how air conditioners work, here is a short version of an amazing process.

The first modern air conditioner was invented by Willis Carrier in 1902. He was an electrical engineer, and the reason for the invention was a humidity problem at a publishing company. Imagine what life would be like, especially here in Florida without this man's great invention!

The diagram below gives us a simple idea of how a very technical system operates.

Air Conditioning Myths Debunked

We've all seen the television show Myth Busters. Two funny guys who spent an hour every week disproving internet rumors and old wives tales. How hard is it to find a needle in a haystack?

Here at Emery Air and Heat, we're myth busting too! Below you will see that in the air conditioning industry there also are some myths that aren't true.

Myth #1 - Closing off vents in unused rooms will lower your energy bill -

Not only will this NOT make your energy bill lower, it actually causes your unit to work harder. If you have a number of rooms that are not being used, consider a zoned system.

Myth #2 - The lower you set the thermostat, the faster you will cool your home -

Air conditioning systems deliver air the same rate. All you will do is use more energy and make your system work harder.

Myth #3 - Your air conditioning doesn't need to be checked unless there's a problem. NOT true and here's why:

All a/c manufacturers are now requiring at least one maintenance a year to keep the warranty intact. You tune up your car, changing the oil, having the brakes checked etc. An Air conditioning system is one of the most expensive items you buy, why would you neglect it? We perform a 21 pt checkup on our customers systems at least once a year.

Myth #4- Maintenance plans aren't worth the money -

If you invest 139.00 a year to have someone come to your home and perform a 21 point tune-up this guarantees that if something major goes wrong, you will be covered by your warranty. In this hot Florida weather, air conditioners work hard to keep us cool in our homes.

Myth #5 - Bigger is better

If you are getting a new air conditioner, the contractor should always do a heat load to ensure you are getting the right size unit. Too small and it will work too hard to keep your home cool. Too big and it will cost too much to cool your home.

Myth #6 - Ceiling fans will cool the room faster

Ceiling fans will make you feel cooler, but they don't actually lower the temperature of the room. Turn off your ceiling fan if you leave the room. A ceiling fan that runs all the time actually can cost you as much as $7 a month.

Air Filters 101

What Are The Best Air Filters To Use In My Home?

We don't always concern ourselves with our air conditioning filter. It's not on the top of our priority list. It's one of those sight unseen things. But it is extremely important to change your filter every three months and some companies recommend you change them every month, especially if you have pets or allergies.

How many times have you gone to the hardware store and grabbed a one dollar fiberglass filter?
This may not be the best avenue to take regarding your indoor air quality.

Mechanical air filters are the most common type of home air filters. These types of air filters use synthetic fibers to trap dust and other particulates, preventing them from circulating throughout your home.

The effectiveness of a filter is measured in MERV Ratings ( Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value).
Usuallly the cheaper the filter, the lower the MERV Rating.

Types of mechanical air filters:

  • Fiberglass - Removes less than 10% of air pollutants in your home, has a MERV Rating between 1 and 4,  and costs around $2.00. Originally designed to protect your air conditioning equipment, not to improve your Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).
  • Pleated - Removes up to 45% of air pollutants in your home, has a MERV Rating between 10 and 13 and costs around $10. This is one of the most common air filters used.
  • High Efficiency - These are the most practical for most HVAC systems. They remove up to 85% of air pollutants in your home, have a MERV Rating between 14 and 16, and cost between $25 and $35 dollars.
  • Hepa Filters- Removes up to 98% of air pollutants in your home and have a MERV Rating of 14-16. However, they can only be used in a whole house filtration system or a stand alone air purifier.
**An air filter with too high an efficiency rating can cause your air conditioner to work harder. Only use the filter recommended by the air conditioning manufacturer or what your HVAC company recoommends.

Ways To Lower Your Electric Bill

It's the dog days of summer in Florida. It's HOT. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, your air conditioner accounts for almost half of your electric bill.

Here's a few tips on how to lower energy costs this summer:

  • Plant trees or shrubs around the exterior of your home to provide shade.
  • Use solar or mesh screens on your windows - this will intercept up to 70% of solar energy before it gets into your house.
  • Set your thermostat at 78 degrees when you are home and between 80-82 when your away, saving you from 5-15% on your bill.
  • Use ceiling fans when you are in the room. Turn them off when you are not. A ceiling fan that is running all of the time, can cost you as much as $7 a month.
  • Consider buying a higher SEER air conditioner. See our blog about SEER and what it means here: How to know what size air conditioner to buy.
  • Keep the filter clean so the condensation drains properly.
  • Install a programmable Thermostat. See our blog about thermostats here:What's So Hot About Smart Thermostats
  • Close drapes and blinds in the hot summer afternoon. This will keep your home cooler into the evening.
  • Use electricity between off peak hrs- run the dishwasher and do laundry after 8 PM.

What's So Hot About Smart Thermostats?

Today's technology is changing everything! Want to make your life easier? There is an app for everything.

5 Reasons why you may want one:

  1. Travel - If you travel frequently or own 2 homes in different states, your WiFi Thermostat can give you the comfort in knowing your Air Conditioning is working fine. If there are any problems with your unit, you can have it set up to where you can be emailed if the unit experiences any problems. With the high humidity in Florida, a broken air conditioner can cause mold, mildew, dampness and unpleasant odors.
  2. Easy Programming- They're easy to program, just download the app and enter the times and temperatures on your phone. Smart Thermostats learn your habits and calculate accordingly.
  3. Change the Temperature From Anywhere - Forget to turn up the A/C when you left this morning? Grab your cell phone, open the app and voila! you've turned your A/C up so it's not running all day while your out.
  4. Monitor Your HVAC System - Some WiFi thermostats will alert you if the efficiency drops, the humidity is too high, it's time to change your filter, if the coils are clogged or your low on refrigerant.
  5. They're COOL - You can change the background color to match your walls, upload pictures, play music, display the outside temperature and be notified of weather alerts during a storm.
One of our favorites is the Bryant Housewise™ Thermostat. Check out the video below:

Repair Or Replace?

Your heating or cooling system is one of the most expensive components of your home.

It's not always easy to know whether your should repair or replace your home's cooling and heating system, especially if you're facing an emergency situation. While there's no hard-and-fast rule, there are some important considerations to keep in mind as you make your decision:

Age of Your System

Air conditioners and heat pumps last an average of 10 to 12 years. If your equipment is within these ranges, expect more repairs in the future.

Outdated Technology

Technology changes all of the time. This is as true for your HVAC system as it is for your phone. By replacing aging equipment, you'll be able to take advantage of smart new features and increased efficiency's  that can save you money on your utility bills.

Cost of Repairs

As a rule of thumb, Consumer Reports recommends replacing a product when repairs exceed 50% of the cost of a new one.

Freon

Freon laws change every year. The EPA has addressed the concerns of R-22 and the ozone layer.
R-22 is being phased out and will be no longer available after 2020. The freon that is now being used in new systems is R-410A. R-22 is hard to get and very expensive, so if you have an older unit that uses R-22, and it breaks down, your best option is to replace your unit with a system that uses the EPA compliant freon R-410A.

If you are in need of a new unit, or have an air conditioner that you are not sure about, please give us a call at 321-639-4691 or visit our website www.emeryairandheat.com for more information.

How To Know What Size Air Conditioner To Buy

Choosing a new air conditioner can be overwhelming and confusing. Today's blog will help you understand the terminology used by HVAC contractors when making your purchase.

The following three items are of the most important:
  1. Heat Load - Critical- Too small and it will not cool your home. Too large and it will cost too much to run and make your compressor work too hard. Homes "gain" heat from many sources: windows, electronics, appliances and the sun beating on your roof. The sum of these sources is known as the Heat Load, and is expressed in BTU's. 1 Ton = 12,000 BTU's. All Air Conditioning Contractors should do a heat load on your home before installing your new unit. The tonnage of the unit must be greater than the heat gain.
  2. SEER Rating - Air Conditioning manufacturers are required by law to rate their equipment by energy efficiency. This rating is known as SEER or (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating). The higher the SEER, the more energy efficient. Higher SEER air conditioning systems are more expensive, but will make up the difference in your energy bills. You can save as much as $50 a month with the highest SEER. In the chart below you can see your yearly savings.

Five Tips For Preparing Your HVAC System For Summer Vacation

School is out and it's summer vacation time! As you are readying for your vacation to the beaches or mountains, prepping your air conditioning system is the last thing on your mind. There are a few important ways to keep your HVAC system running smoothly. The last thing you want is to come home to air conditioning problems. Below are 5 Tips to prep your HVAC system so you can enjoy your vacation:

  • Raise the Thermostat- While your away, you want to ensure your HVAC system is keeping your home comfortable. Raising the thermostat will save you energy and prevent future repairs. In general, it is a good idea to keep the thermostat set at 85 degrees. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can set it to a more comfortable temperature on the day you are arriving home.
Do not turn your air conditioning system off! To understand why, you need to understand that             one of the things air conditioners do is remove humidity. The humidity should no more than             50% . More than that and you run into problems with mold, musty odors, peeling paint and                warped furniture.
  • Surge Protection - You never know when you might lose power at your home. Especially here in Florida with the onset of hurricanes in the summer months. If there is a power outage, your HVAC system could be damaged. Installing a surge protector will put your mind at ease with the knowledge your a/c system is safe. If you are unsure if your system has surge protection contact us here 321-639-4691.
  • Air Filter Maintenance- While you are away, your a/c system will still be running. To ensure it is running at peak efficiency, make sure you replace the filter or clean the filter before you go.
  • Security - The new smart thermostats, or WiFi thermostats have a function that you can receive an email if your hvac system is having problems. You can also have it set up to notify your HVAC company to be notified with a phone number of someone that is watching your home. We can have it fixed before you return.
  • Routine Maintenance - It is a good idea, if you haven't had your a/c system serviced in a while, to have us come out and check out. We also offer Planned Maintenance Contracts to our customers. If you are interested in this, check out one of our blogs The Just Right Club, or check out our website Emery Air and Heat.

The Low Down Dirty Facts On Your Air Conditioning Filter

Most people know they should change their air conditioning filter, right? But it's not high on our list of priorities. Changing your filter should be a priority and here's why:

Dirty air filters reduce air flow- As a filter becomes clogged, it reduces the air flow, causing the fan motor to work harder. This results in more energy use, causing higher electric bills.

Dirt builds up inside the unit- This causes such problems as dirty coils which can make them freeze up. Frozen coils block air flow, causing your unit to work harder to try and cool your home. This puts more strain on the unit in those hot summer Florida months. If this continues, you may end up having to replace your system sooner than you should have.

Dirty ducts - Dirty air filters cause your ducts to become dirty. This causes your unit to work harder, You will have more dust in your home and higher electric bills, as well as multiple health problems from allergies and sinus problems.

There are many different kinds of Filters. In our next post, we will talk about the types of filters, there are, MERV ratings and what it all means.

Indoor Air Quality and What It Means to Your Health

Do you know if the air your breathing in your home is clean?  Which of your family members has allergies or asthama?
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the air qualilty within a building or a home.

There are many things that affect the quality of the air you breathe:
  • Allergies
  • Mold
  • Flu
  • Bacteria
  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Viruses
  • Odors
  • Tobacco Smoke
  • Dander
  • Voc's (Volatile Organic Compound) organic chemicals are widely found in household products such as paints, varnishes and wax. Cleaning supplies, disinfecting, cosmetic, degreasing and hobby products.
According to the EPA, most people spend 90% of their time indoors, not realizing that the air indoors can be more polluted than the air outside. The EPA also reports that indoor air pollution levels can be 100x higher than the air outdoors.

Tomorrow we will touch base on the different types of products and what are the best to improve the air you breathe in your home.

8 Signs It's Time To Upgrade Your Air Conditioner

8 Signs It's Time To Upgrade Your Air Conditioner

There are a few telltale signs it's time to consider replacing or improving the performance of your Air Conditioning System. It's time to call a professional if any of the following apply to you:

  • Your Air Conditioner or Heat Pump is more than 10 years old. Consider replacing your unit with a system that has a high efficiency rating. Seer ranges from 14 - 20. The higher the SEER the more efficient it will be.  This can save you as much as 15% on your energy bill.
  • Your equipment needs frequent repairs or your energy bills are going up.
  • Some rooms in your home are too hot or too cold. Improper equipment operation, duct problems or inadequate insulation could be the cause.
  • No one is at home for long periods of the day and you do not have a programmable thermostat. Install a programmable or smart thermostat to start saving money while your away or sleeping, A WiFi thermostat will have an app for your phone. If you leave home without raising your thermostat, you can raise it using the app. Smart thermostats learn your habits and will learn your schedule and adjust accordingly.
  • Your home has humidity problems. Leaky ducts and inadequate equipment can cause the air to be too humid in the summer and too dry in the winter.
  • Your home has excessive dust. Leaky ducts can pull particles from the attic and distribute them throughout your house. Consider having an Air Quality evaluation ( which we will talk about in our next post.)
  • Your air conditioning system is noisy. You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with your indoor coil.
  • Your score on theHome Energy Yardstick is below 5. This means that your probably paying more than you need to on energy bills.
Give Emery Air and Heat a call if you would like us to assess your current HVAC system. We're glad to help!  Emery Air and Heat is always here to serve our customers.

Why Your Air Conditioner is Freezing Up and What To Do About It

If your air conditioner is freezing up, you will know immediately. If your house is suddenly warm in the dog days of summer, this could be the problem.

What To Do If Your Air Conditioner Freezes Up
  • Shut off the system to avoid risking damage to the compressor.
  • While you wait for the ice to melt, find the condensate drain and make sure it isn't plugged.
  • The un-thawing process can take up to 3 hours.
  • Once the ice is melted, turn the air conditioner back on. It should start cooling your home immediately.
What Causes an air conditioner to freeze up?

There are several things that can cause this:
  • Dirty Air Filter: Restricted air flow is the culprit frequently. It is extremely important to change or clean your filter once a month.
  • Low refrigerant levels: Whether you have a leak, or the freon was overcharged at installation, low freon can make the evaporator coil to cold. Call an air conditioning company to fix the leak, or to have the refrigerant recharged according to manufacturer directions.
  • Drainage Problems: When hot humid air blows across the evaporator coil, the coil removes heat and moisture from the air. In humid areas like Florida, this can turn into condensation within the air conditioner. In normal circumstances, the water drips into the drain pan and out of a floor drain. If something blocks the drain, the backed up water freezes all the way back to the coil.Check the drain pan weekly in the summer to make sure the water is dripping into the pan.
The best way to make sure these things don't happen to your unit is to have a maintenance plan. To learn more or schedule a repair, please contact Emery Air and Heat. Proudly serving Brevard County since 1976.

Why You Should Have A Planned Maintenance Contract On Your Air Conditioning System

Air Conditioners and heat pumps that receive regular maintenance can maintain up to 95 percent of their efficiency, however for every year that they are not maintained, they can lose 5 percent of their efficiency. The Coils (indoor and outdoor) if dirty are two key pieces that can have a negative effect on the entire comfort system. Coils become dirty when particles and debris naturally accumulate and dirt can build up around the cooling fins. Dirty coils can cause many problems, including:

Blocked Airflow
Imbalanced refrigerant levels
Reduced comfort levels inside the home
Increased utility bills
Decreased performance and lifespan of equipment

If the problem is left unattended, it can become severe. Seriously blocked coils can lead to:

Ice on the evaporator coil
Decreased cooling capacity
Overheated compressor

All air conditioning manufacturer's require their systems to have at least once yearly maintenance to keep the warranty intact.

Emery Air and Heat's Just Right Club will take care of your maintenance needs.
